A unique Caribbean dive resort
Utila, Bay Islands
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What kind of wetsuit do you recommend?
It is mostly about personal preference. Given the water temperature most divers will be comfortable in 3mm wetsuits, with short or long sleeves / legs. Some divers will dive without wetsuits for most of the year.
What gear should I bring?
It is up to you. We have a full set of quality rental equipment, including wetsuits, masks, regulators, BCDs, fins, dive computer etc. for rent. Most experienced divers bring their own equipment and simply use the free weights that we provide.
How many divers per Dive Master?
Our rule is no more than 10 certified divers per Dive Master (but we average closer to 5 or 6). And typically 1 instructor for every 4 Resort Course students. Depending on the experience level of the group, we may slightly adjust that.
What is the water temperature?
The water temperature is typically in the low-to-mid 80s F. The average annual outside temperature is 85°F (29°C), and ranges from the mid to upper 80's during the Summer months and in the high 70's to low 80's during the Winter months (November - February).
Do you sell dive gear?
Yes. We typically have a small selection of gear for sale.
What size dive tanks do you have and are they steel or aluminum?
We use 80cc standard size aluminum tanks. We have some 60cc pony tanks too.
Is there spare gear on the boat?
We normally keep one set of spare gear on the boat.
Do you have weights?
Yes. They are included in your dive package.
Do you provide the option to dive with Nitrox?
Yes. You have to let us know at least 24 hours in advance if you would like to use Nitrox.
Is there a re-compresssion chamber on the island?
Yes. In Utila town, about 20 minutes from the resort. It is funded by part of the $25 reef fee you pay.
Is there emergency oxygen and a First Aid kit on the boat?
Do you have sea-sickness / diarrhea / headache pills available?
Yes. We typically keep an assortment of standard over-the-counter pills at the resort office (not on the dive boat). But we recommend you bring pills that you are comfortable with and that you know work for you.
What time is the first dive of the day?
We normally leave the resort at 8am.
How many dives can I do in a day?
A typical day will include 3 guided dives. Often divers will do one or two more shore dives a day (assuming they have at least one dive partner).
Can I shore dive on my own if I am an experienced diver?
No. We do not allow solo dives under any circumstances. Resort staff will be happy to join you if you need a partner.
How likely is it that we see whale sharks?
Whale sharks are seen around the island year-round, and typically more frequently in March-April and August-September. Utila is one of the best places in the world to find them, but it is not at all guaranteed. Our experienced boat captains and dive masters will stay in close communication with other captains, and will go looking for them when conditions are good, but in the end nature is unpredictable. We often have multiple sightings in a week, and then go several weeks with none. On average we have sightings once every 4-6 weeks. We also offer an excursion on our smaller / faster boat to specifically go searching for whale sharks and dolphins - for divers and non-divers.
Are we guaranteed to see [wildlife creature] on our visit?
Unless your “favorite wildlife creature” is “a happy & friendly Utopia Village staff member” the answer is typically no. We simply cannot guarantee seeing any species. But our Dive Masters are very experienced and know the reef and dive sites well. They will do their best to find and point out as many favorite and unique species as possible. Speak to them if there is something in particular you would really like to see.
What courses do you offer and how much do they cost?
We have a list of all courses available, including their prices, elsewhere on this website. Click here to view the information.
I'm already certified, but can I get a refresher coarse before the first dive?
Yes. We can provide a quick refresher course in our pool or protected part of the ocean.
Will I get cell-phone reception on the boat?
Not if we can help it :-). One of the best things about Utila and Utopia Village is that you can get away from the day-to-day things that distract and stress you out.
